Chapter Eight

Ceejay floated in a black cloud. Two perpendicular lines slashed between her brows as she listened for the usual morning sounds that always woke her. She couldn’t move as heaviness oppressed her body. Her eyelids remained stubbornly shut.

Uhh . . . open. It’s not so difficult. Just lift upward. She wailed as the very real fear of death rushed in and struck her. Noises began to penetrate her mind. The soft buzz of machines. She stiffened when she identified the soft clicking of feet near her. Voices, quietly talking. She lay still—frozen.

Who the fuck is in my house? A burglar? Mason! Oh, my god. She forced herself not to move as she strained to hear and make sense of it all. It then came to her. Where the fuck am I?

Ceejay winced at the blinding white light of a flashlight. Behind the pink, hazy glow of closed lids, she could feel someone bending over her. Her eyes fluttered open in a blur to see his lips moving, forming her name, but no sound. She closed her eyes and swallowed. The bitter taste in her mouth made her cringe.

“Ceejay? Mrs. Fargo? Can you hear me?”

Fargo? What the fuck is the man on?

Ceejay forced her eyes open again. She licked her lips, thinking of the words she wanted to say, but didn’t know how to utter them. A voice called her name again. The effort to clear her raw throat jarred like a hollow shout in her ears, but all that she managed to croak was, “Wh-ere am I?”

Anxiety crept in as she started to panic, realizing for the first time which sound she missed the most. The niggling gurgling of her little boy, as he begged in his baby language for his morning bottle.

“Mason . . . where is my baby?”

“Mrs. Fargo, you’re in a hospital in Roswell. Can you hear me? C’mon, let me see those eyes,” he cajoled, as she looked up at him.

Ceejay lay still as he wrapped her arm with a blood pressure cuff. Feeling it cinch tight was comforting somehow. Slipping in and out of consciousness, in a dream, she felt Colt’s grasp pulling her toward him.

“Your wife is a fighter, Mr. Fargo. A real fighter. When she arrived it was touch and go. We didn’t think she was going to survive the first 48 hours, but the moment you arrived, she seemed to settle down and improved rapidly.”

“Water . . . please.”

Ceejay sensed a movement that pulled her gaze sideways. She drew a staggered breath as warmth flooded her heart.

He was here. He did come for me.

Tears burned behind her eyelids as she noticed the concern that darkened his eyes. She looked away, struggling not to drown in their depths.

“Well, I’ll leave the two of you alone. Maybe now you’ll take some time to go and rest as well, Mr. Fargo,” the specialist said with an indulgent grin at Damiano.

Ceejay watched him leave. She licked her dry lips and Damiano assisted her to sip water from the straw.
